A properly designed solar and battery system does far more than simply put solar panels on your roof. It creates an integrated home energy system designed around how your property actually uses electricity. During daylight hours, your solar PV system generates clean electricity from the available sunlight, allowing your home to use that energy directly instead of purchasing as much electricity from the grid.

Generate your own electricity

Solar PV panels convert daylight into usable electricity for your home. While the system is generating, that electricity can be used to power everyday household loads — from lighting, appliances and home offices to heat pumps and electric vehicle charging.

The more of your own solar energy you can use, the less electricity you need to import from your energy supplier. A well-designed system therefore starts with understanding your property, available roof space, orientation, shading and, importantly, your household's electricity consumption.

Store the energy you don't use

Your home won't always consume electricity at exactly the same time your solar panels are producing it.

Without battery storage, surplus solar generation may be exported back to the electricity grid. A battery allows more of that energy to remain available to your household.

When your solar panels are producing more electricity than the property requires, surplus generation can be directed into the battery. That stored energy can then be available later, when household demand increases or solar generation falls.

Battery storage therefore allows you to make better use of the electricity generated on your own roof.

Use your energy when you need it

As daylight fades and solar generation reduces, your battery can supply stored energy back into the home.

Instead of immediately returning to grid electricity in the evening, the property can draw from energy generated and stored earlier in the day. Depending on the system, household consumption and battery capacity, this can significantly reduce the amount of electricity that needs to be purchased from the grid.

Modern battery systems can also provide additional flexibility when combined with suitable time-of-use electricity tariffs. Where appropriate, a battery may be configured to charge from the grid during lower-cost periods and make that energy available when electricity would otherwise be more expensive.
